We are longtime residents of communities where the quality of life has been getting worse because Airbnb investors are buying up houses and turning them into short-term rentals (STR). The stability of our daily lives is being disrupted by a stream of transient occupants coming through our neighborhoods. Our quiet residential streets are being turned into hotel businesses.
We are young families struggling to find housing because we have to compete with more and more Airbnb investors. In cities that already have a housing shortage, this causes rent and house prices to outpace the wages of average families. Airbnb is no longer about renting out an extra room to make additional income. Airbnb is about investors pricing families out of home ownership.
We are asking city governments to restrict Airbnb and other short-term rental companies following the example of New York City. Until such restrictions are in every city, we are asking our friends and families to support us in boycotting Airbnb and other short-term rentals.
Please join us in restoring the quality of life in our communities!
